Things to Do in Austin, TX: May 2014

    It’s beginning to feel like summer and Austin has a lot of events to offer in May! Below you will find a list of activities, festivals, races and more for you to participate in that are uniquely Austin.

    Get out to the lake, play at a park or find some indoor activities… the sky’s the limit. Annual events such as Pecan Street Festival and the Austin Fashion Week are some favorites, and there are plenty of other things to do outside, like Cap 2K Swim or the World’s Biggest Disc Golf Weekend, to make this May in Austin one to remember!

    April 26-May 3 | Austin Fashion Week – Enjoy a week full of fashion events including a fashion show, concert and awards show.

    April 30-May 25 | Shakespeare in the Park – Enjoy a Shakespearian play, As You Like It, at the Zilker Hillside Theater.

    May 1 | First Thursday – Every First Thursday of the Month on South Congress, there is plenty to see, buy and eat for all ages. Many stores have special sales and snacks for their customers, and it’s a great event for families!

    May 1 | West End First Thursday – Make the first Thursday of every month a night to spend at a gallery in the West End.

    May 2-4 | Austin Psych Fest – Head out to Carson Creek Ranch in East Austin for a night of music, lights and camping.

    May 3 | Cap 2K Swim – The annual open water race will take place at our beloved Lady Bird Lake. The race hopes to promote clean water conservation and open water swimming, while also raising money for research, support & awareness of prostate cancer.

    May 3 | Free Comic Book Day – Simply walk into any participating comic book store (in Austin and around the world!) all day to recieve free comic books. If you can’t participate this year, this event takes place the first Saturday of every May.

    May 3 & 4 | Pecan Street Festival – The bi-yearly arts & crafts festival on Sixth Street is a great way to spend the weekend being creative in the heart of Austin, Texas. The Pecan Street Festival is A fantastic event for all ages!

    May 3 & 4| World’s Biggest Disc Golf Weekend – Fourteen cities in Texas, including Austin and Wimberley, as well as many cities around the world, will be hosts to thousands of disc golf enthusiasts who will play on more than 100 courses worldwide.

    May 4 | Rookie Triathalon – A triathalon for all speeds and paces!

    May 4 | Cinco de Mayo Downtown Block Party – Celebrate Cindo de Mayo a day early.

    May 9 | Corporate Battle of the Bands – Local bands compete for the top spot as Austin’s best local band.

    May 9 & 10 | Pachanga Latino Music Festival – This Latino Music Festival, at Fiesta Gardens on the shores of Lady Bird Lake in East Austin, will serve Austin with multiple acts like Los Lobos and Vallejo, for it’s sixth year. Enjoy latin-inspired foods and crafts as well!

    May 10 | Gardens on Tour – Enjoy a tour of five private gardens as well as the Wildflower Center for some ideas on how to design a garden using wildflowers and native Austin, Texas plants. Could be a great way to spend a part of Mother’s Day weekend with your family!

    May 10 | O. Henry Pun-Off – The 36th Annual Pun-Off, held at the O. Henry Museum, is filled with hundreds of storytellers and people ready to pun.

    May 14 | Nerd Nite – Gather at a 6th Street bar with your fellow nerds for drinks, conversation and fun.

    May 16 | Bike to Work Day – Leave out the carbon footprint today and enjoy the fresh air on your way to work. There will be numerous locations serving free breakfast to those that participate!

    May 17 | Mighty Texas Dog Walk – Celebrate service dogs at the dog walk around the Palmer Events Center and enjoy entertainment, shopping and more inside.

    May 22-June 8 | Kerville Folk Festival – Enjoy music, camping and more with your family at the Quiet Valley Ranch just south of Kerrville. For almost an entire month, over 30,000 people, including 1,500 singer-songwriters come together at this mecca of music.

    May 23 | RedFest – Head out to the country music festival of the summer at the Austin 360 Amphitheater.

    May 24 & 25 | Fiesta Amistad – El Amistad club is a non-profit civic organization in Round Rock to support efforts emphasizing education, community services, recognition for veterans and Hispanic cultural awareness. This annual event features live music, food and family entertainment.

    May 24-26 | Texas Tax-Free Appliance Weekend – This weekend, pay no Texas taxes when you purchase any energy-efficient applainces. Go green!

    May 26 | Capital of Texas Triathalon – Swim, bike & run with thousands of others in the heart of downtown Austin. Races for all ages and running levels, so don’t be intimidated if you haven’t trained!

    May 27 | Trailer Food Tuesdays Begin – Eat at all of your favorite Austin trailer eateries in one place on the last Tuesday of every month.

    May 28 | Antiques Roadshow – Antique’s Roadshow makes a pitstop in Austin.

    May 29-June 1 | Chaos in Tejas – For it’s 9th year, this festival will be full of acts of many genres, including punk, metal, hip hop, indie rock and more.

    May 30 & 31 | Ballet Under the Stars – The Metamorphosis Dance Academy Ensemble will perform for free at the Zilker Hillside Theater for two nights only!
