Things to Do in Austin, TX: January 2014

It’s 2014! We welcome the new year with a month of non-stop excitement. We have created a list of fun Austin events for you to enjoy this January. During the winter season, Austinites are definitely not hibernating. Enjoy events in Austin, TX like the Barton Springs Polar Bear Splash, or clear a few nights to enjoy local bands during Red River Free Week who play for free. Create an amazing home or garden space by visiting the Austin Home and Garden Show then band together as Gorillas during the annual Austin Gorilla Run to add that unique hoot and hollar to kickstart your 2014 full of things to do in Austin!

January 1 | Happy New Year!

January 1 – January 31 | Wildflower Center Free Admission Month – Stop and smell the wildflowers for FREE the entire month of January at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in South Austin.

January 1 | Barton Springs Polar Bear Splash – Release your inner polar bear and take a dive into Barton Springs to jump start your new year! The air may be chilly, but the water is a refreshing 68 degrees year round.

January 2 | First Thursday – Every First Thursday of the Month on South Congress, there is plenty to see, buy and eat for all ages. Many stores have special sales and snacks for their customers, and it’s a great event for families!

January 2 | West End First Thursday – Make the first Thursday of every month a night to spend at a gallery in the West End.

January 2 – January 11 | Red River Free Week – Check out some local bands you could go crazy over with this week for free.

January 8 | Nerd Nite – Gather at a 6th Street bar with your fellow nerds for drinks, conversation and fun.

January 10 – January 12 | Austin Home & Garden Show – Dreaming of your perfect thinking spot or herb or vegetable garden? Make your dreams a reality at this one stop shop for everything home and garden!

January 14 – February 15 | Hyde Park Theatre FronteraFest – Laugh, cry, dance and enjoy this festival rich with dramatic, musical and comedic performances! Venues range from theatres, public places and private homes.

January 19 | 3M Half Marathon – Tighten up your shoe laces and get ready to run one of the longest stand-alone half marathons in Texas benefiting Communities in Schools.

January 20 | MLK Celebration – Honor Martin Luther King Jr. by marching from UT campus to the Capitol. Then boogie on over to Huston-Tillotson University for a culture-rich experience with fun, music and food.

January 24 – January 26 | Star of Texas Tattoo Art Revival – Interested in Ink? This tattoo convention exhibits a robust gallery of tattoo art along with vendors, panels and contests.

January 24 – January 25 | MomCom – Calling all motivated Moms! For entrepreneurial moms and those looking to be one, this is the place for you to connect! Held at the Westin at the Domain.

January 25 | Tree Talk Winter Walk – Gather your families and rediscover mother nature together with a kid’s tree climb, engaging demonstrations or a guided stroll through the lovely foliage.

January 25 | Austin Gorilla Run – Grab your band of fellow gorillas and don’t forget your running shoes for this wild 5K benefiting mountain gorillas. Gorilla suits are provided.
